DLR

Company background
DLR is the national aeronautics and space research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, energy, transport and security is integrated into national and international cooperations.

SAF testing capabilities
Pre-Screening: The fuel prescreening process requires low volume of fuel and screens fuel candidates before the official ASTM D4054 process. The process was developed in JETSCREEN under the lead of DLR and in collaboration with the US NJFCP program and is officially acknowledged by FAA. It is a two-tier process and uses low volume analytic methods (< 5 mL) in tier alpha to characterise fuels, and then utilises existing data and high-fidelity numerical methods to predict fuel properties to assess the fuel candidate and provide fast feedback to fuel producer to systematically de-risk the development of the fuel production pathway. As the process technology matures towards producing an aviation grade fuel, additional measurements requiring higher volume of fuels are added in a second tier beta to further de-risk systematically. DLR is the only official POC in Europe for fuel prescreening and continuously improves its prescreening capabilities.
